Ideal for group homes, this ODLQC Accredited dementia care course contributes toward the
recommended guided learning hours, you should carry out
practice reflection, document and attach subsequent
evidence from this training. The course involves use of the
SFC knowledge sets for Dementia Care and distance
learning dementia care workbook.

Designed to provide for managers, senior staff or care support workers an advanced accredited benchmark standard of Dementia care. Delivery methods will include reflective practice, intervention tools, group

work, case studies and visual presentation.

Who should attend?

This training is relevant to key workers and care staff with a basic
understanding of dementia care and who may be responsible for planning
care to clients in all care settings – hospital, residential, day care or fostercare
or in the client’s own home.

Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to

1. Understand what dementia is
2. Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia
3. Know the most common types of dementia and their causes
4. Understand factors relating to an individual’s experience of dementia
5. Learn more about the processes of the brain
6. Learn more about the three types of memory
7. Learn about the Kitwood standards
8. Reporting skills for dementia care using person centred approaches
9. Practice most common interventions
10. Learn more about the client/ carer relationship in Dementia care
11. Understand the effect of ambience and mood
12. Understand more about promoting positive behaviours
13. Learn more about the effects of medication on the individual
14. Identify key methods of approach that are practical to your own
environment
15. Complete, in small groups, case studies
16. Complete a multiple choice audit Action plan

The key points to remember are:
1. The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.
2. Staff should not be expected to be on duty
3. Staff attending must remain for the entire length of the session to qualify for a certificate
