This course contributes toward the recommended guided learning hours, you should carry out practice reflection, document and attach subsequent evidence from this training.
- Summary
The purpose of this session is to provide to a group staff within the workplace,
an introduction into communication using the method of Makaton with individuals
who do not use a recognised language format, for example those with profound
learning difficulties, some forms of mental illness, some forms of physical illness,
and any combination of these.- Who should attend?
This unit is relevant to care workers who provide personal care to clients in all
care settings – hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the client’s
own home.- Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to

• Develop an understanding of a background knowledge of Makaton
• Understand the origins and place of Makaton in the signing world
• Enable students to develop a practical working knowledge of the first
stage of the Makaton vocabulary
• Provide a brief introduction to the use of symbols in communication - How many candidates may attend?

2. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years

Included in the session is theory based information that may involve a powerpoint presentation.
The key points to remember are:
1. The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.
2. Staff should not be expected to be on duty
3. Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.
4. This course, by it’s nature, is practical and candidates should be expected to participate
