A modular workshop over 12hrs for health care
workers exploring aspects of mental health in learning
disabilities, challenging behaviours and autism.- Who should attend?
Staff who support individuals with learning disabilities in residential care, day centres or in their own home.
- Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to

• Identify the relevant and most common types of mental health problems
• Understand why people with learning disabilities are vulnerable to developing
mental health problems
• Adopt a holistic approach to the assessment of mental illness. Understand their own
and others roles in assessment
• Be aware of the different interventions available
• Have an understanding of some of the legal and ethical issues• An understanding of autistic spectrum disorder
• Identifying what causes the condition
• Developing empathy for the client with the disorder
• Understand what approaches are available to help people with autism• Understand what behaviours are challenging
• Understand key causes of challenging behaviour
• Understand the type of interventions and basic de-escalation techniques
• Make an effective plan• Understand why people self harm
• Understand triggers of behaviour
• Understand what interventions are available - How many candidates may attend?

3. Certificates are issued for each candidate and are valid for approximately 3 years
4. A candidate assessment is available for post training audit
Included in the session is theory based information that may involve a power point
presentation.
The key points to remember are:
1. The training venue should be quiet and undisturbed.
2. Staff should not be expected to be on duty
3. Staff attending should remain for the entire length of the session.
