Summary

This training is relevant to learners who are or will be supporting individuals who require wheelchairs as a mobility aid.

Who should attend?

This training is ideally suited for health care workers in residential, home care or caring for carers settings,  line managers,  Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, registered nurses, families supporting loved ones.

 

Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to
  • Basic wheelchair standards
  • Types of wheelchairs available
  • Basic components of wheelchairs
  • Understand  5 levels of chair user dependance
  • Safety -tipping, slipping, falling
  • Pushing the wheelchair on a variety of surfaces
  • Handling Obstacles/ ramps /doorways/ tight spaces
  • 13 steps to good basic wheelchair posture

 

 

How many candidates may attend?
Due to the practical nature of this course, this training is limited to 15 learners.

Equivalent Relevant information

  1. Certificates are issued for each learner and if dated, are valid to that period. N.B Learners attending must complete the entire duration of the training to qualify for a certificate.
  2. A learner assessment may be required post training for audit and PDP purposes.
  3. Venue requirements: The practical nature of this course means that the venue must be sufficiently capable of enabling learners, a practice area, at least three wheelchairs, and where possible, a demonstration chair and bed and if a suitable bathroom area is accessible this would also be useful but is not a requirement.
  4. Learners will be required to carry out a competence test in a practical manner.  Any learner with a valid reason not to take part, (such as a recent back injury etc) should notify the trainer immediately.

Registration details are kept by us for Seven years and are legal documents. It is important to register in block capitals clearly on the day.
